Teeth Whitening & Veneers
Teeth Whitening FAQ
What is at-home whitening?
At-home whitening allows you to lighten the shade of your teeth from the comfort of your own home, using products recommended or provided by your dentist. It helps brighten overall tooth color or target specific areas of discoloration without scheduling an in-office procedure.
How does teeth whitening work?
Whitening products use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. The percentage listed on the packaging indicates the strength of the product. These ingredients break down stains caused by drinks like coffee, tea, and soda, along with discoloration from smoking, aging, and certain foods.
Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes—when used as directed and purchased from a trusted brand or your dental office. Overuse or misuse can cause sensitivity, so following instructions is important.
How quickly will I see results?
Most people notice improvement within one week. Some products show subtle results even sooner.
How long will whitening last?
Whitening longevity varies from person to person. Habits like drinking coffee, tea, soda, or smoking can cause teeth to darken more quickly. Results can last several months up to one year, depending on lifestyle and oral hygiene.
Can I whiten my teeth if I have crowns, veneers, or fillings?
Yes, but whitening products do not lighten crowns, veneers, or fillings. These materials do not change color.
- If you whiten your teeth and your restorations appear darker afterward, fillings can be replaced to match the new shade.
- Crowns and veneers would need to be remade if you want them to match the newly whitened teeth.
Can I whiten my teeth if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
There is not enough research to confirm that whitening is completely safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Because of this, most dentists recommend waiting until after pregnancy and breastfeeding to begin whitening treatments. If you are unsure, consult both your dentist and your physician.
How often should I whiten my teeth?
Most people whiten daily until they reach their desired shade. After that, occasional touch-ups are done as needed, depending on habits such as drinking dark beverages or smoking.
Veneers FAQ
What are veneers?
Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that cover the front surface of your teeth to improve their appearance. They can enhance tooth color, shape, length, and help close small gaps. Veneers are typically made from composite resin or porcelain.
Do veneers look natural?
Yes. Both porcelain and composite veneers are designed to mimic the natural look of tooth enamel, including its translucency and shine. When done properly, veneers blend seamlessly with your smile.
Can veneers fix crooked teeth?
Veneers can correct minor misalignments, small gaps, and slightly crooked teeth. However, significant crowding or alignment issues may require orthodontic treatment (such as braces or clear aligners) before veneers are placed.
How long will veneers last?
Veneers can last a long time if they are not abused by biting hard things, good home care, and minimal bad habits. With proper home care and maintenance, veneers can average 10-15 years lifespan.
